America Recycles Day Proclamation Ceremony

Fairfax City Mayor, Scott Silverthorne issued a proclamation in support of America Recycles Day at the City Council Meeting on Tuesday, 11/13/12. The event took place at Fairfax City Hall, 10455 Armstrong St., Fairfax, VA 22030. Mayor in concert with the City Council recognized Novemeber 15, 2012 as America Recycles Day. Students from Lanier Middle School joined the Mayor as he read the proclamation. Memebers of Lanier recycle team were invited to join the Mayor, which included, students, staff, and parents.

The True Costs of Food

Students participated in the True Costs of Food Presentation on Nov 19 and 20 through Family And Consumer Sciences classes and Eco-Club. This event included interactive presentative, harvesting of produce from our courtyard, preparing and eating of healthy food. Menu for the hands-on component included:
  • Winter vegetable salad with red wine and oil vinaigrette dressing
  • Baked kale chips
  • Roasted turnip and  carrot samples

Accenture Lanier Workday

Students and staff from Lanier’s Eco Club joined volunteers from Accenture, Lands and Waters, City of Fairfax Parks and Recreation on Veteran’s Day, Monday 11/12/12. The project included invasive removal, trail maintenance in Kutner Park area, creating a freshwater bog, enhancing a vernal pool, and winterizing a student vegetable garden. This work supports existing “Living Classrooms” programs at Lanier MS, providing hands-on learning experiences for students that integrate with science curriculum.

Virginia Naturally Schools Recognition Award – 2012

In Sept 2012, Lanier MS was awarded  the Virginia Naturally School Recognition Award. irginia Naturally Schools is the official environmental education school recognition program of the Commonwealth, administered by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries with support from the Department of Education, Department of Environmental Quality and other resource agencies. The goal of this recognition program is to recognize the efforts undertaken by Virginia schools that increase the environmental awareness and stewardship of its student.

2012 – July 4th parade – Fairfax City

Lanier MS students, parents, teachers, participated in the 2012 Fairfax City July 4th Parade. They dispalyed the Green Flag and Go Green message with a Chevy Volt (electric car) as part of the parade.
